In this video, we have a look at the group show Carnival – Hei Qiao Artist Community (I) at Mizuma and One Gallery, and Project Without Space # 6 at Pekin Fine Arts, a collaboration between the artists Chen Shaoxiong and Liu Ding.
Mizuma & One Gallery shows the collective exhibition Carnival – Hei Qiao Artist Community (I), including artists as Bi Xin, Cai Dongdong, Chen Chenchen, Dai Hua, Dai Chenlian, Dai Dandan, Du Kun, Fu Xiaotong, Han Shuying, He Xun, Huang Xu, Jiang Laihao, Jiang Peiyuan, Li Chenzi, Lu Xiao, Liu Yongkang, Lv Zhiqiang, Qu Wenqian, Wang Tianxuan, Wu Dawei, Wu Tian, Wu Wei, Xia Yu, Yan Zhancheng, Yang Mao, Yu Ying, Yu Jing, Zhai Liang, Zhao Yang and Zheng Pingping. The majority of these artists live and work in Heiqiao Artist Community, near by 798 and Caochangdi, a fully functional arts studio area, but less known and commercial. The theme of the “Carnival” is related to Bakhtine’s notion of carnival poetics. The key lies in the release of the collective spirit departing from the individual, rising in this way a collective mind and behaviour.
Project Without Space # 6 at Pekín Fine Arts, is an ongoing collaboration by Chen Shaoxiong and Liu Ding. For this 6th project they produced a series of paintings comprised of either a combination of designs from various schools of Modernist art or a series of patterns from primitive art objects. These art forms, standing for different spiritual and aesthetic pursuits, are juxtaposed within the same exhibit framework, in a conflicting hybrid. The artist hope the works can be appreciated as rational and logical paintings: “This required us to keep questioning ourselves closely on every choice we made, reflecting on and sharing the basis of our choices: How indeed are our paintings created?”
